A Heavy Heart
From Yara Armenta
Going through life, there will be many times where one experiences a heavy heart, whether it be due to a loved one passing away, being let down, or an unexpected change. I have recently experienced having a heavy heart repeatedly in my personal life, as well as in my work life, these past few weeks. These situations made my day-to-day come to a sudden stop and caused a lot of reflecting.
In those times, my first thoughts were, “God gives, God takes, blessed be the name of the LORD.” These were Job’s words when he had lost many things in his life. (Job 1:21)
There is a moment where our flesh becomes prideful and tries to disguise the emotions we may be feeling, whether it be sadness, fear, or other emotions that are hard to process. My encouragement to you all and myself is to allow ourselves to feel the emotions, but not to dwell in them.
The book of Romans, in chapter 12 verse 15, says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” Cry if necessary, allow yourself to feel the emotions, and hand them over to God.
Sadness that is not surrendered becomes depression, anger that is not surrendered can cause grudges to remain, and fear that is not surrendered can turn into anxiety.
Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) We must rest our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual tiredness upon God. Rest the heavy heart upon Him, only He can restore it. There is hope after the heaviness.
