Faithful Friend

From Yara Armenta

I grew up in an Hispanic Christian church and though I was raised with similar worship songs, there is one that I couldn't find the English version of, “Jesus Mi Fiel Amigo,” which translates to, "Jesus My Faithful Friend."

The first verse says,
“Take me there
Where I know there will be peace
Where I have to be silent
To hear You speak
Where everything is reality
And time no longer exists"

There are times when we enter holy moments and God’s presence is tangible, and in those moments, our spirits become in complete admiration towards our Creator. It is almost like we get a glimpse of eternity with God. Our lives can get hectic, so when quiet holy moments come, we truly never want to leave them. For our spirits will always yearn to be with their Creator. We are alive due to the breath that was given to us as stated in Genesis 2:7, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (NJKV)

Verse 2
“Again and again
When I am next to You
I can't contain myself
When You look at me like that
There is nothing more to say
You are everything to me"

There is something so surreal when you know that the God of the universe finds favor in you. Many weep, many laugh, and many stay silent upon this information. He truly saw a value in you that surpasses all human understanding. So when we feel God’s gaze, what else can we say? “Tu eres todo para mi,” which means, “You are everything to me.” When the word “everything” is said, it means everything. Psalms 5:12, “For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.” (NKJV)

Chorus
“Jesus my faithful friend
My sweet walk
Stay with me
I don't want to go back
I don't want to go back
I don't want to go back"

For those who experienced a life without God due to walking away from faith or simply not knowing Him, we can all agree with these lyrics. “I do not want to go back,” for I lived with what the world has to offer, and it was empty. By saying this, you are declaring against and refusing to step back into a life of sin or without God. It is a declaration from your spirit to your flesh that there is no going back, you will not go back. Psalms 84:10 says, “For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” (NKJV)

Each word in this song reminds us of Jesus’ faithfulness to us, as He states in Matthew 28:19-20 when commanding us to make disciples and letting us know that He will be with us even to the end of age. Jesus, the One True Faithful Friend.
